Taper Fade Mullet: Taper vs Fade, 6 Styles and How to Ask

The taper fade mullet is the easiest mullet to live with. A taper only shortens the very edges of the hair (around the ears and at the neckline), so the sides keep some weight and the cut grows out gently. It is the version most barbers recommend for a first mullet, and the one most likely to pass at work.

Temple fades and shadow fades are close relatives: both keep contrast low, like a taper.

6 taper fade mullet variations

1. Low taper fade mullet

Low taper fade mullet

Tapered just at the neckline and sideburns. The most subtle option.

2. Mid taper fade mullet

The taper climbs a little higher above the ear for a cleaner outline.

3. High taper fade mullet

High taper fade mullet

More contrast while still keeping some weight at the sides.

4. Curly taper fade mullet

Curly taper fade mullet

Neat edges with full curls on top and at the back.

5. Wavy taper fade mullet

Waves give the back movement; the taper keeps the sides tidy.

6. Long taper fade mullet

Long taper fade mullet

Shoulder-length back with tapered edges. Balances length with a clean outline.

How to ask your barber

“Taper fade mullet. Taper only around the ears and the neckline, starting from a number 2, no skin. Keep weight on the sides. Leave length on top and keep the back long.”

Who it suits

  • First-time mullet wearers: the lowest-risk option.
  • Office jobs: neat edges, nothing extreme.
  • Fine hair: keeping weight on the sides avoids exposing the scalp.

Maintenance

Edges every 4–5 weeks, top every 6–8 weeks, back every 2–3 months. That makes it one of the cheapest mullets to keep up.

FAQ

Is a taper fade mullet the same as a low fade mullet?

Not quite. A low fade shortens the whole lower side; a taper only touches the edges. See the low fade mullet guide.

Can I switch to a fade later?

Yes. A taper is the easiest starting point to build up from.
