Curly Mullet: Curl Types, 6 Variations and a Curl Care Routine
Curly hair and the mullet are a natural match. Curls add volume at the back without any styling, hide the awkward grow-out stage, and give the cut a shape that straight hair has to be blow-dried into. The catch is that curly hair behaves differently from straight hair in the chair, and a barber who cuts it the same way can leave you with a triangle instead of a mullet.

Know your curl type
| Curl type | What it looks like | Mullet tip |
|---|---|---|
| 2A–2C (wavy) | S-shaped waves | Behaves almost like straight hair; light layers |
| 3A–3C (curly) | Defined ringlets | Leave 2–3 cm extra length for shrinkage |
| 4A–4C (coily) | Tight coils | Shape dry; tapers and fades work very well |
Wavy rather than curly? See our wavy mullet guide.
Why shrinkage matters
Curls can look 30–50% shorter dry than wet. If your barber cuts the back to collar length while it is wet, it may spring up to mid-neck once dry. Ask for a dry cut, or at least for the final shape to be checked dry.
6 curly mullet variations
1. Short curly mullet

Curls on top and a short back. Low effort and good for 3B–4A curls.
2. Layered curly mullet

Layers remove weight so the curls do not form a triangle. Best for thick curls.
3. Curly mullet with low fade

A low fade keeps the sides neat while the curls stay full. See the low fade mullet guide.
4. Curly mullet with taper

Softer than a fade and grows out more gracefully.
5. Curly mullet with burst fade

Curves around the ear and leaves length at the neckline. High contrast.
6. Natural curly mullet

Minimal shaping, just enough to keep the outline. Relies on healthy, defined curls.
How to ask your barber
“Curly mullet. Please cut it dry or check it dry at the end. Taper the sides, keep the curls on top, and leave the back a couple of centimetres longer than you think, because it shrinks.”
Curl care routine
- Wash 2–3 times a week with a sulphate-free shampoo; condition every wash.
- Apply a curl cream or leave-in conditioner to soaking-wet hair.
- Scrunch upward, do not rub with a towel. Use a microfibre towel or T-shirt.
- Air-dry or use a diffuser on low heat.
- Refresh on day two with a spray of water and a little cream.
FAQ
Should I brush curly hair?
Only when wet and coated in conditioner, with a wide-tooth comb. Brushing dry curls breaks the pattern and causes frizz.
How often should I trim a curly mullet?
Sides every 4–5 weeks, back every 8–10 weeks.
