Mohawk Mullet: 5 Styles, Strip Width and How to Ask for It
A mohawk mullet keeps a strip of longer hair running from the forehead to the nape, cuts the sides short, and lets the back grow long. It combines the height of a mohawk with the length of a mullet. It is bold, but there are tamer versions where the strip is wide and the sides are only tapered.

How it is built
- Centre strip: 5–10 cm wide, running front to back.
- Sides: faded or shaved short, often a skin or low fade.
- Back: left long, continuing the strip down to the nape.
Mohawk mullet vs faux hawk
| Mohawk mullet | Faux hawk | |
|---|---|---|
| Sides | Shaved or faded short | Short but not shaved |
| Strip width | Narrow to wide | Wide, blends into the sides |
| Back | Long | Usually short |
| Boldness | High | Medium |
5 mohawk mullet styles
1. Wide mohawk mullet

A broad strip with tapered sides. The most wearable version.
2. Skin fade mohawk mullet

Bare sides and maximum contrast. See our skin fade mullet guide.
3. Curly mohawk mullet

Curls give the strip natural height without gel.
4. Thick-hair mohawk mullet

Dense hair holds a tall strip well.
5. Spiked mohawk mullet
The strip is gelled into spikes. The most punk version and the most styling effort.
How to ask your barber
“Mohawk mullet. Leave a strip about 7 centimetres wide from front to back. Fade the sides from a number 1. Keep the back long and connect it to the strip.”
Styling
- Blow-dry the strip upward on damp hair.
- Apply a strong-hold paste or clay, working from roots to tips.
- Shape the strip up and slightly forward; let the back fall naturally.
Things to consider
- Workplace: a narrow strip and shaved sides are hard to tone down. A wide, tapered version is safer.
- Upkeep: sides every 2–3 weeks.
- Thin hair: choose a wide strip so it does not look sparse.

How long does the strip need to be?
At least 5 cm for height, 8 cm or more for spikes.
