Burst Fade Mullet: How It Works, 5 Styles and Barber Guide

A burst fade mullet uses a fade that curves in a half-circle around the ear and stops before it reaches the back. That leaves the nape untouched, so the mullet length flows straight down from the crown. It is one of the sharpest-looking mullets, and also one that is easy to get wrong if the barber fades too far back.

How a burst fade works

  • The fade starts short just above and around the ear.
  • It fans outward in a curve, like a sunburst, getting longer as it moves away.
  • It stops before the back of the head, so the nape keeps all its length.

This is what separates it from a regular fade, which wraps all the way around and would cut away the mullet.

5 burst fade mullet styles

1. Low burst fade mullet

Low burst fade mullet

The fade sits low around the ear. Subtle and office-friendly.

2. Mid burst fade mullet

Mid burst fade mullet

The curve goes higher, so more scalp shows. The most popular height.

3. Burst fade mullet with textured top

A choppy, matte top adds volume to balance the short sides.

4. Curly burst fade mullet

Curly burst fade mullet

Curls on top and at the back with clean sides. Very popular on coily hair.

5. Burst fade mullet with design

A line or simple pattern is shaved into the faded area. It grows out in about two weeks.

How to ask your barber

“Burst fade mullet. Start the fade around the ear, curve it outward, and stop it before the back. Don’t touch the nape. Keep length and texture on top.”

If your barber reaches for the clippers at the back of your head, remind them. That one pass ruins the shape.

Maintenance

A burst fade loses its sharp curve fast. Book a cleanup every 2–3 weeks. The back only needs shaping every 6–8 weeks.

FAQ

Does a burst fade mullet suit every face?

It suits oval and square faces best. On round faces, add height on top to balance the width at the ears.

Can I get one with straight hair?

Yes. Use texture spray on the back so it does not hang flat.
