Wolf Cut Mullet: 6 Variations and How to Ask for It

The wolf cut mullet takes the heavy, shaggy layers of a wolf cut and adds the longer back of a mullet. The result is wild on purpose: lots of volume on top, a choppy fringe and a back that flicks out at the neck. It is one of the few cuts that looks better slightly messy than perfectly styled.

6 wolf cut mullet variations

1. Short wolf cut mullet

All the shag, but the back stops just past the hairline. A good first try.

2. Long wolf cut mullet

The back goes past the collar. Strongest 70s rock feel.

3. Layered wolf cut mullet

Even more layers through the crown for maximum movement. Thick hair only.

4. Curly wolf cut mullet

Curls make the layers pop with almost no styling. Ask for a dry cut.

5. Korean wolf cut mullet

Softer, glossier version with a curtain fringe. See the Korean mullet guide.

6. Straight-hair wolf cut mullet

Possible, but needs texture spray daily so the layers do not fall flat.

How to ask your barber

“Wolf cut mullet. Heavy, choppy layers through the top and crown, shaggy fringe to my eyebrows. Keep the sides medium or lightly tapered. Leave the back long and texturise the ends so they flick out.”

Who should skip it

  • Very fine or thin hair: heavy layering removes too much and looks sparse.
  • People who want a neat look: it is meant to look undone.
  • Strong crown cowlicks: can make the top stick up awkwardly; ask your barber first.

Styling

  1. Spray sea salt or texture spray into damp hair.
  2. Rough-dry with fingers, flipping the hair forward and back.
  3. Twist a little matte paste through the ends of the top and back.

FAQ

How often does a wolf cut mullet need trimming?

Every 6–8 weeks to keep the layers defined.

Can I grow out of a wolf cut mullet easily?

Yes. The layers blend into a shag or a regular longer cut as they grow.
