Low Fade Mullet

Low Fade Mullet: Where the Fade Starts, 5 Styles and Barber Tips

A low fade mullet fades the hair short just above the ears and around the lower sides, while leaving everything above that line, and the back, at full length. It sits between the soft taper and the sharp skin fade: clean enough to look intentional, subtle enough that it does not dominate the cut.

Where a low fade starts

The fade begins about 1–2 cm above the ear and the neckline, and blends upward over a short distance. The shortest point is usually a #0.5 to #1. Because it stays low, more of the side hair remains, which keeps the outline soft.

5. Curly low fade mullet

How to ask your barber

“Low fade mullet. Start the fade just above the ear from a number 1, blend it up quickly. Keep the top textured. Don’t fade the back. Leave the nape long.”

Who it suits

  • Most face shapes: the low line does not widen or narrow the face much.
  • Thick hair: removes bulk at the sides without losing the mullet shape.
  • Round faces: pair with height on top.

Styling and maintenance

Rough-dry with a little sea salt spray and finish the top with matte paste. Clean up the fade every 3 weeks; trim the back every 6–8 weeks.

FAQ

Low fade or taper for a first mullet?

A taper is softer and grows out more gently; a low fade looks a little sharper. See our taper fade mullet guide.

How long does a low fade stay sharp?

About 2–3 weeks before the line softens noticeably.
