Shag Mullet: 5 Styles, Feathered Variations and How to Ask
The shag mullet mixes two 1970s cuts: the shag, with choppy layers all over, and the mullet, with its longer back. The result has volume at the crown, a feathery fringe and a back that flicks out at the ends. It is closely related to the feathered mullet, which uses the same layering with softer, swept-back sides.

5 shag mullet styles
1. Classic shag mullet

Choppy layers from crown to nape, fringe to the eyebrows.
2. Feathered shag mullet

The sides and fringe are swept back and away from the face.
3. Long shag mullet

Back past the shoulders with layers throughout. Needs good conditioning.
4. Curly shag mullet

Curls exaggerate the layers. Ask for a dry cut.
5. Short shag mullet

All the choppy layers with a shorter back. A good way to test the look.
How to ask your barber
“Shag mullet. Choppy layers through the whole head, especially the crown. Feathery fringe to my eyebrows. Keep the sides medium, not faded. Leave the back long and point-cut the ends so they flick out.”
Who it suits
- Thick, wavy or curly hair: shows the layers best.
- Oval, heart and long faces: the volume at the sides adds balance.
- Fine straight hair: possible, but needs daily texture spray and a lighter layer pattern.
Styling
- Apply sea salt spray or mousse to damp hair.
- Blow-dry with your head tipped forward for volume at the roots.
- Flip the fringe back and out with your fingers.
- Finish with a small amount of light paste on the ends.
FAQ
How often should I trim a shag mullet?
Every 6–8 weeks to keep the layers defined.
Is a shag mullet high maintenance?
Medium. It needs a few minutes of styling but forgives messiness. For an easier option, try a textured mullet.
