Skin Fade Mullet: 3 Fade Heights, 5 Styles and What to Know First
A skin fade mullet takes the sides all the way down to bare skin before blending up into longer hair. Next to that, the length at the back looks dramatic. It is the highest-contrast mullet you can get, and also the one that needs the most barber visits. A bald fade mullet is the same cut under another name.

Skin fade at three heights
| Height | Where the skin shows | Look |
|---|---|---|
| Low skin fade | Just above the ear | Sharp but controlled |
| Mid skin fade | Halfway up the side | Bold |
| High skin fade | Up to the temples | Most extreme contrast |
5 skin fade mullet styles
1. Low skin fade mullet

Skin only near the ear. The most wearable skin fade version.
2. Mid skin fade mullet

A bolder outline that suits thick, dark hair, where the contrast is most visible.
3. High skin fade mullet

Bare skin up to the temples with a long back. A statement cut.
4. Skin fade mullet with mohawk

A strip of longer hair runs from front to back. See the mohawk mullet guide.
5. Curly skin fade mullet

Very popular on coily hair; the clean sides make the curls stand out.
How to ask your barber
“Skin fade mullet. Fade to skin starting just above the ear (or say mid / high), blend it up smoothly. Don’t fade the back. Keep the nape long and leave length on top.”
Things to know first
- Scalp shows: any scars, bumps or a pale scalp will be visible.
- Fast grow-out: it looks fuzzy within 10–14 days.
- Razor bumps: sensitive skin may get irritation; ask for a #0.5 instead of a razor finish.
Maintenance
Fade cleanup every 2 weeks to stay sharp. Back trimmed every 6–8 weeks. Moisturise the scalp if it gets dry.
FAQ
Bald fade or skin fade: what is the difference?
None in practice. Both go down to bare skin.
Is a skin fade mullet good for a first mullet?
It is the boldest option. If you are unsure, start with a taper fade mullet and go shorter later.
